Engaging, elevating and empowering learners with diverse needs
Who we are
ASDAN is an education charity and awarding organisation providing courses, accredited curriculum programmes and regulated qualifications to engage, elevate and empower learners with diverse needs.
Established in 1991, ASDAN exists to advance education and improve outcomes for all learners, with a particular focus on those facing barriers to success. Our vision is to create inclusive educational opportunities that develop learners’ personal, social, and work-related skills.
Our mission is to engage learners with diverse needs to achieve meaningful learning outcomes which elevate them to go on to further education, training and work, and empower them to take control of their lives.
What we do
We create accessible, high quality and impactful courses, programmes and qualifications, and work with our partner educators to foster the personal, social and work-related abilities of learners with diverse needs.
Personal, social, and work-related skills are essential for all learners as they:
- support academic and vocational learning
- help learners re-engage in their education
- enable the acquisition of knowledge and skills for work and service
- prepare learners for entry-level work
- equip learners to live well and make full use of their abilities
We believe that learners should have the opportunity to discover, develop and make use of their abilities to affirm their identities, contribute to society, and challenge educational and social inequalites.
ASDAN supports a wide variety of settings across the UK and internationally, including mainstream and special schools, further education colleges, pupil referral units, local authorities, and community organisations.
ASDAN is committed to prioritising learners with diverse needs, including those who are:
- experiencing poverty in all its forms, whether economic, physical, mental, cultural, spiritual, political or societal
- without support for their emotional and social needs
have a special educational need or disability - not engaged or succeeding in their education and who miss an English and/or Maths pass at 16 or subsequently;
- at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)
We believe every learner deserves the opportunity to discover, develop, and use their abilities. By doing so, they can affirm their identities, contribute to society, and challenge educational and social inequalities.
Research underscores the impact of our work. For example, our flagship Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) qualification has been shown to:
- improve academic outcomes in Key Stage 4, particularly in GCSE English
- support reflective skills and written communication, which enhance performance in traditional subjects
- boost achievement in schools that widely adopt ASDAN courses
These successes demonstrate our ongoing commitment to improving life chances for learners who might otherwise be left behind.
