The learner can:
- Identify the elements of the fire triangle
- Handle a knife safely under direction from an adult; showing they can walk safely carrying a knife at their side and pass a knife safely to a peer
- Cut tinder outside of the triangle of danger
- Arrange the cotton wool with the tinder around it, ready to start the fire, safely under direction from an adult
- Hold the flint and steel correctly and firmly, safely under direction from an adult
- Generate sparks close to the cotton wool and tinder, safely under direction from an adult
