The learner can:

  • Identify the elements of the fire triangle
  • Handle a knife safely under direction from an adult; showing they can walk safely carrying a knife at their side and pass a knife safely to a peer
  • Cut tinder outside of the triangle of danger
  • Arrange the cotton wool with the tinder around it, ready to start the fire,  safely under direction from an adult
  • Hold the flint and steel correctly and firmly,  safely under direction from an adult
  • Generate sparks close to the cotton wool and tinder,  safely under direction from an adult
