The learner can:
- Explain why following health and safety rules is important for people and animals
- Identify common hazards in an animal care environment and describe how to reduce risk
- Explain how poor practice could lead to injury or illness for animals or handlers
- Carry out daily safety checks before working with animals (e.g. condition of fencing, gates, flooring, PPE, tools)
- Follow correct hygiene and biosecurity routines (e.g. handwashing, boot cleaning, correct disposal of waste)
- Give guidance or reminders to others about safe behaviour when appropriate
- Report hazards, faults, or unsafe conditions following agreed procedures
- Demonstrate awareness of personal limits and when to seek help from a supervisor or tutor
