Learning outcomes

(What the learner needs to know, understand or be able to do)

The learner will:

  • 1 .  

    Be able to open a DAW and navigate around the interface, selecting four instruments, demonstrating their knowledge.

  • 2 .  

    Set up a new track to create a simple piece of music, showing knowledge of structuring a piece of music.

  • 3 .  

    Start creating their piece of music and develop the structure from intro to outro, aiming for around three to four minutes in length.

Assessment criteria

(What the learner need to demonstrate in order to meet the learning outcome)

The learner can:

  • Explain what they know about this piece of software (DAW)
  • Explain what is going on as they open the DAW
  • Choose four instruments
  • Demonstrate creating a new channel for each instrument
  • Listen to check each instrument can be heard
  • Demonstrate setting the track to a tempo of choice
  • Set up a metronome to ensure they keep time (when required)
  • Explain the structure of intro, verse, chorus, outro and ending 
  • Choose their instruments and/or samples to make the piece of music, and add them using appropriate channels 
  • Check each channel has sound, and the instruments / samples can be heard
  • Demonstrate how they like to begin creating their music
  • Explain how they like to develop their track further
  • Show how they develop what they are creating, through listening and adjusting
  • Explain how they structure their tune when making it, and how this develops or changes as they spend more time on it
  • Choose the length of the piece of music and create the intro, chorus, verse and outro accordingly
