Assessment criteria
(What the learner need to demonstrate in order to meet the learning outcome)
The learner can:
- Identify at least four common first aid situations in animals (e.g. bleeding, heat exhaustion, eye injuries, lameness)
- Describe visible and behavioural signs that indicate an animal may be in pain, shock, or distress
- Assess the level of urgency and explain which situations require immediate action and which require observation or reporting
- Demonstrate at least two safe first aid actions appropriate to minor injuries (e.g. cleaning a small wound, applying a light dressing, keeping the animal calm and contained)
- Explain the correct use of common first aid items (e.g. bandages, antiseptic spray, thermometer, gloves)
- Demonstrate appropriate hygiene and biosecurity measures during and after first aid (e.g. wearing gloves, disinfecting equipment, disposing of waste safely, and washing hands)
